This biofuel can be used either alone (known in this case as B100 biodiesel) or mixed in any proportion with conventional diesel hydrocarbon derived from gasoline. In this case, it will be labeled according to its biodiesel content; that is, B20 for 20% biodiesel content, B25 for 25% content, etc.

Thus, biodiesel is considered, along with ethanol and biogas (methanol), one of the most important biofuels. Its production is carried out through the use of renewable resources. This liquid biofuel is produced by chemical reactions of transesterification and esterification. These chemical reactions are triggered by fats and oils (pure or recycled) that react with short-chain alcohols, such as methanol or ethanol.

Throughout this reaction, the main step of which takes place in a reactor, other products and by-products are processed or generated. These can include glycerol (useful in the cosmetics industry), soaps, or wastewater. The right thermal design is a fundamental factor in the manufacturing of this process equipment.
