Hairpin heat exchangers design<\/h2>\n

As a registered HTRI member <\/strong>(\u00a9 Heat Transfer Research, Inc.)<\/a><\/strong>, at SACOME<\/strong> we have a new design tool, the Xhpe package<\/strong>, being this software suite a specific program for the calculation of hairpin heat exchangers<\/strong>. Thanks to this tool, our technicians are able to carry out an in-depth analysis of the heat transfer<\/strong> process that occurs in the U bundles<\/strong> of this type of heat exchangers, by getting a more optimized and reliable design<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

HTRI<\/strong> integrates this calculation software in addition to the well-known modules of Xjpe<\/strong> for the design of double tube heat exchangers (tube-in-tube)<\/strong>, and Xist<\/strong> for the design of multitubular heat exchangers (shell & tube)<\/strong>, included in the version 7 of Xchanger Suite, thus endowing our technical department with the latest developments and advances in the field of heat transfer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What is the configuration of a hairpin heat exchanger?<\/h2>\n

This design apparently consists of two shells<\/strong> that share a common U-shaped tube bundle<\/strong>. But, in fact, both shells make up a single volume<\/strong> since they are directly interconnected by a U-shaped header<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Unlike multi-pass heat exchangers<\/strong> (multiple passes in tubeside), hairpin heat exchangers<\/strong> have the peculiarity that the shellside stream circulates countercurrent to the tubeside flow, in all passes<\/strong>. This, together with a smaller shell section<\/strong>, makes it a more efficient and economical design<\/strong> compared to a multiple pass heat exchanger<\/strong> when the process requires a temperature crossing between the cold and hot fluid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Advantages of hairpin heat exchangers<\/h2>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.17.6″]<\/p>\n

\n

  • It has a better thermal performance<\/strong> than a multi-pass heat exchanger, even for processes having very low EMTD (effective mean temperature difference)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • As it is a U-tube design<\/strong>, metallic expansion joints are not required to absorb the differential expansion between the service channel and the product channel.<\/li>\n
  • The U-radius <\/strong>of the hairpin itself is also an effective transfer length<\/strong>, unlike the elbow that would be needed to interconnect in series two shell and tube heat exchangers.<\/li>\n
  • It allows a design with removable U-tube bundle but also completely welded<\/strong>.\n<\/li>\n
  • The pressure drop<\/strong> in the product channel is lower<\/strong> than the one achieved in an equivalent multipass design.<\/li>\n
  • It is a compact design<\/strong>, with low maintenance cost<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
